Basketry and Beyond: Constructing Cultures
Thursday 14 – Saturday 16 April 2011
This conference offered the opportunity to explore the importance of basketry in human culture from a broadly academic perspective. Members of the research team behind the Basketry exhibition spoke about the project, as well as contributions by guest speakers including artist Mary Butcher on The Basket Maker in East Anglia, Professor David Guss of Tufts University on Gender Abstractions and Imaginary Journeys, exhibition curator Professor Sandy Heslop on Basketry in the Frame and Professor Tim Ingold of University of Aberdeen with a talk titled To Build is to Weave.
"What I enjoyed about the conference was that being a basket-maker I got the opportunity to learn from the other side, from archaeology and anthropology papers, communicating with like minds"
