Heather Avenue Infant School were working on a project on Food. Teacher Cath Williams visited the Teacher’s Inset evening and was inspired to bring her class to see the exhibition and take part in a practical workshop.

Artist Doo Gurney designed a practical session for the children to make individual food baskets. Using chicken wire or cable ties to make a frame work, the children used strips of paper, raffia, foil, fabric, ribbon, string, netting, and recycled plastic packing strip to create their baskets.

This workshop drew out themes from the exhibition, looking at the range of materials used in basketry as well as the ways in which basketry is used in catching and storing food.
