    Nests forms and fishing nets

A diverse range of outcomes made by the pupils at North Walsham Junior School, 2011

Date: Friday 25th March

School: North Walsham Junior

Group: 48 year 4 pupils

Teacher: Helen Garratt

Artist: Sue Maufe

Helen Garratt attended the Teachers INSET evening and was inspired to bring 48 of her year 4 pupils to see Basketry. The school were also taking part in the Creative Partnerships programme, and the pupils had elected to do a project on weaving, so the exhibition provided a perfect resource. Helen wanted her pupils to work with an Artist to do some free-form experimental weaving, to contrast the precise, mathematical weaving which they had done in class. Artist Educator Sue Maufe allowed the children to play with natural materials, developing the pupils’ platting and check weaving skills, to make nest forms and fishing nets. Taking inspiration from the recycled materials used in the exhibition, the children also incorporated plastic fruit nets and sweet wrappers in their work.
